Current situation of the application of banking cards in China 

With the development of domestic banking, the application of banking cards grows rapidly. In specific application, as the current banking cards adopting magnetic media have technological defects (), it is easy for some law- breakers to counterfeit the cards after acquiring bank accounts in illegal methods, which results in serious damage of the legal clients. 

As for the current situation, debit cards, the mainstream of the application of banking cards in the country, are in the interconnected status during application, which is quite different from that of the foreign countries. In term of the responsibilities of domestic banks, the main situation to face is to prevent various kinds of counterfeited cards from being used in different banking institutions and consumer terminals by different means so as to ensure the payment of the clients not will not be delayed due to the counterfeited cards as long as the clients haven’t lost their cards and the transaction password at the same time. In case a client loses the banking card and the password at the same time, he or she should assume the responsibility. 

Trends and Problems of the Application of International Banking Card

As the security defects of magnetic-medium cards has been realized, MasterCard and Visa are actively promoting the new standard for IC intelligent cards adopting EMVCo Certificates. However, though the new standard has fine secrecy, its core technologies belong to foreign institutions, domestic banks must pay high Certificates costs to use it, it also involves updating of a large quantity of current POS equipment and ATM equipment, which also costs hugely. In Shenzhen, for instance, due to the upgrading and renovation of a large quantity of equipment, the preliminary cost will exceed RMB100 million (Source: Shenzhen Unionpay Financial Network CO., Ltd.). Meanwhile, among main advanced countries of the world, only France is comparatively successful in the application of CB and IC cards, no other large-scale successful cases. Therefore, starting form the actual situation of the country, it still needs study and demonstration to determine whether our country should follow the relevant trend of foreign countries.

Problem Analysis and Demands 

The mainstream of the application of banking cards in China is debit card, all of which adopt on-line transaction upon password. The banking institutions should prevent counterfeited cards from being used as long as the clients haven’t lost their cards and the transaction password at the same time, the main method of counterfeiting to be focused on is that the law-breakers acquires the account of the client by stealing ATM receipts of the clients, and then acquire the password by peeping, after that, they copy the banking cards with the same account by cracking the encryption of the magnetic-media banking cards and commit crimes. 

Therefore, if there is a new technology that can ensure the banking card solely entitled to the transaction to be the original card issued by the bank as long as the client hasn’t lost the banking card. This technology can avoid damages of the banks due to responsibility of fake cards. Meanwhile, this new technology must comply with the operation environment and flows of current banking cards and need not costly equipment, it should realize low cost and high reliability and can put an end to the possibility of loss not due to the clients, besides, it should possess domestic intellectual property.

Technical Features

As a 2D barcode encoding method with completely independent intellectual property, it has the data capacity and high reliability excelling other 2D barcode encoding methods, so it can store large quantity of data in minute area through printing, which ensures low costs; On the other hand, as it adopts data error correction technologies, it can still work normally in spite of partial damages. Besides, due to its advanced technologies, it is a closed encoding system for the exterior, so it has excellent performance of anti-counterfeiting and is very suitable for the application of banking businesses.

At the same time, considering the special requirements of banking applications for security, the brand new 2D barcode compound printing technology-covert technology is adopted to protect the information of the barcode, which ensured the security of the barcode information. This compound printing technology adopts special printing materials and technologies, it can produce multi-layer CM 2D barcode information, which is not interfering with one another, in designated areas with different printing technologies, thus, the data capacity is increased and the effect of security is strengthened. During application, the CM 2D barcode information of each layer can be read with special optical sensors by irradiating the barcode area with light resources with different wavelength. Application in Detail 

When the client transacting the banking card, the bank creates encrypted information with the client’s personal profile and account status through the special algorithm defined by the bank, then create encrypted image with high data capacity with CM 2D barcode encoding software, and the image is printed to the designated area on the banking card through the compound printing technology. 

When client using the banking card with CM barcode in various banking service points, ATM terminals, POS terminals and other service terminals accepting the banking card, the service terminals can read the encrypted information in the CM barcode image with small and inexpensive card-swiping barcode reading devices while reading the information of magnetic-medium information, and at the same time compare the encrypted information with the information on the magnetic medium with the stipulated by the bank, after the consistency of the and the inputting of the two kinds of information is ensured, the payment password and the succeeding normal transaction can then be started. 

In this case, as long as the client hasn’t lost the banking card, even if the law-breakers have acquired the account and counterfeited the information in the magnetic medium and even they have got the transaction password, they cannot pass another encrypted information protected by the CM barcode containing large quantity of data. Only when the law-breakers acquire both the original banking card and the transaction password can they commit crimes, however, in this case, the responsibility should be assumed by the client. 

Application Examples 

Method 1: The printing area (20mm*7mm) of the CM 2D barcode is the blank area following the signature bar of the current banking card, it can contain the CM 2D single-layer barcode data of about 300 Bytes. If the covert printing technology is adopted for 3-layer compound printing of visible, ultra-red and ultraviolet lights, the total data capacity will be increased to about 900 Bytes in case of level-4 error correction. 

Method 2: The printing area (60mm*7mm) of the CM 2D barcode is area of the signature bar of the current banking card, it can contain the CM 2D single-layer barcode data of about 900 Bytes. If the covert printing technology is adopted for 2-layer compound printing of ultra-red and ultraviolet lights (visible light is not applicable as the client needs to sign in the area), the total data capacity will be increased to about 1.8KB in case of level-4 error correction. 

Method 3: The printing area (85mm*12mm) of the CM 2D barcode is area of the signature bar of the current banking card, it can contain the CM 2D single-layer barcode data of about 2KB. If the covert printing technology is adopted for 3-layer compound printing of visible, ultra-red and ultraviolet lights, the total data capacity will be increased to about 6KB in case of level-4 error correction. 

During application, the CM 2D barcode data of covert printing and the magnetic information of the banking card itself will not interfere one another, and related barcode information and magnetic information can be read in one time by serial connection of the magnetic head and the CIS sensor, and thus the influence of the new application on the procedure of current banking business is minimized. 

Data of multiplayer printing can either be used in combination with CM 2D barcode data or be used to strengthen the secrecy by forming the foundational relationship between the CM 2D barcode data between different layers, which is very flexible. 

The adoption of special printing technologies including ultra-red and ultraviolet can radically avoid the counterfeiting of banking cards and thus exclude the banks from risks of banking card misappropriation.
